1 - Getting Started - What do you want to know about?

If you wish to examine Horsham District Council’s Planning System Website to review the current and previous planning actions taken on any application made by anyone who lives in the planning area controlled by Horsham District Council (HDC) you will need as a minimum all or some of the following data to examine the system.Identify the property (address - name and/ or road number - together with the post code if possible)You may also find in the local paper for example the West Sussex Gazette (South Downs Edition) HDC’s advertisement which lists the local planning applications received.  Each application is summarised as it will appear in the HDC Planning Website. HDC advertise the planning applications so that anyone may write in support or against the application.  Residents almost next door to planning applications may receive a letter from HDC inviting their comments.For West Chiltington in particular the letters “WC” are the planning applications particular to West Chiltington.  From this detail you will see the applications being made in your own particular road, street or lane.

2 - Historical Planning Information - There are two types of historical planning information “Historical and Recent”.
2a - Historical Buildings.
These relate to Listed Buildings and in the main these are properties and barns at least 100 years old.  In west Chiltington there are approximately 65 (plus) listed buildings.  The planning applications can be viewed on line and the Listed Buildings Officer deals with these applications where changes are proposed by the owners.   The rules and regulations for listed buildings are not listed here as they are complex and best left to the experts.

2b - Recent Buildings.
These relate to modern properties (not listed) and in the main the HDC Planning System covers all planning applications from approximately just prior to 1940 to current date.   If a particular property is viewed on line its recent planning history can be viewed.  However, only the more recent planning applications contain a full trail of correspondence and submitted drawings.

3 - Gather your information

If you want to know about any planning application then you will need most of the following items.  However if you have the HDC Planning Reference alone then easy access to the HDC website and the particular application is assured.The items required are as follows;

  • Address – road/lane name – house name and or number – post code (This is almost essential for some search patterns if other data is not known.
  • HDC reference code in the style – DC/XX/YYYY
  • DC is an HDC given.
  • XX is the year – styled for 2006 – XX is 06 – 2007 is 07 etc
  • You may also require for difficult searches where little detail is to hand be able to identify – The Ward which for West Chiltington is Chanctonbury and the Parish obviously is West Chiltington.  Other data may also be required depending on the width and depth of your search.  The table in HDC’s planning has many other search aides which can be entered if required.
